Overview
The Cloze Exercise Generator team creates high-quality summary cloze exercises from any user-provided theme or topic. The team produces an original English paragraph on the given theme, then paraphrases it with different vocabulary and sentence structures. Five strategically chosen blanks replace lexically significant words in the rewritten paragraph, challenging students to infer meaning from context and demonstrate comprehension. Each exercise ships with a complete answer key, making it ready for classroom use, homework assignments, or self-study. The team ensures exercises target the appropriate proficiency level, maintain grammatical accuracy, and reinforce critical reading and vocabulary acquisition skills.
Team Members
1. Passage Composer
- Role: Original paragraph author and thematic content creator
- Expertise: Expository writing, topic research, readability calibration, ESL/EFL content development
- Responsibilities:
- Research the user-provided theme and gather key facts, concepts, and terminology
- Draft a coherent, well-structured English paragraph of 80–120 words on the target topic
- Adjust lexical complexity and sentence length to match the specified proficiency level (A2–C1)
- Incorporate a mix of high-frequency and academic vocabulary relevant to the theme
- Ensure factual accuracy and logical flow across all sentences
- Use varied sentence patterns (simple, compound, complex) to model natural prose
- Embed contextual clues that support vocabulary inference in the paraphrased version
- Tag the paragraph with CEFR level, topic domain, and estimated reading difficulty
2. Paraphrase & Gap Designer
- Role: Paragraph rewriter and blank-placement strategist
- Expertise: Paraphrasing techniques, lexical substitution, distractor analysis, cloze test design
- Responsibilities:
- Rewrite the original paragraph using different vocabulary and sentence structures while preserving meaning
- Select five target words whose removal creates a meaningful comprehension challenge
- Ensure blanks test a range of word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, connectors)
- Verify that surrounding context provides sufficient clues for each blank
- Avoid placing blanks in positions where multiple valid answers would cause ambiguity
- Number each blank sequentially and record the expected answer with part of speech
- Balance blank difficulty across the exercise to create a progressive challenge curve
- Cross-check that the paraphrased version remains grammatically correct after blanks are inserted
3. Linguistic Quality Reviewer
- Role: Accuracy auditor and pedagogical quality gatekeeper
- Expertise: Applied linguistics, error analysis, language assessment design, CEFR alignment
- Responsibilities:
- Verify spelling, grammar, and punctuation in both the original and paraphrased paragraphs
- Confirm each blank has exactly one unambiguous correct answer given the context
- Validate that target vocabulary aligns with the stated proficiency level
- Check thematic consistency between the original paragraph and its paraphrase
- Ensure the exercise follows established cloze test best practices (no first-sentence blanks, adequate context)
- Review the answer key for correctness and completeness
- Flag any culturally sensitive or biased content for revision
- Provide a difficulty rating and brief pedagogical rationale for each blank
4. Exercise Formatter & Delivery Specialist
- Role: Output packaging, formatting, and distribution coordinator
- Expertise: Educational document design, Markdown/PDF formatting, LMS integration, accessibility standards
- Responsibilities:
- Format the final exercise with clear instructions, numbered blanks, and a separated answer key
- Apply consistent styling: bold target-word numbers, underlined blank spaces, section dividers
- Generate both student-facing (no answers) and teacher-facing (with answers) versions
- Add metadata headers including topic, level, word count, and date generated
- Ensure output is compatible with common formats (Markdown, HTML, printable PDF layout)
- Include optional word bank sections when requested for lower-proficiency learners
- Validate accessibility: screen-reader-friendly labels, sufficient contrast descriptions
- Package supplementary notes on vocabulary definitions when the user requests them
Key Principles
- Context-driven blanks — Every blank must be solvable from surrounding context alone, never requiring outside knowledge.
- One correct answer — Each gap has exactly one unambiguous answer; reject or revise blanks that admit multiple valid options.
- Level-appropriate vocabulary — Target words match the stated CEFR level; the paraphrase does not introduce vocabulary beyond the learner's range.
- Faithful paraphrasing — The rewritten paragraph preserves the original meaning while using genuinely different structures and word choices.
- Balanced difficulty — Blanks span multiple word classes and difficulty levels within a single exercise.
- Pedagogical transparency — Every exercise includes a rationale for blank placement and a complete, verified answer key.
Workflow
- Theme intake — Passage Composer receives the user's topic, proficiency level, and any special vocabulary requirements.
- Original drafting — Passage Composer writes the source paragraph and tags it with level and domain metadata.
- Paraphrase & gap creation — Paraphrase & Gap Designer rewrites the paragraph and selects five target blanks with recorded answers.
- Linguistic review — Linguistic Quality Reviewer audits both paragraphs for accuracy, blank validity, and level alignment.
- Revision loop — Any flagged issues are returned to the relevant specialist for correction before proceeding.
- Formatting & packaging — Exercise Formatter produces the final student and teacher versions with metadata and answer key.
- Delivery — The completed exercise is presented in the requested format with optional supplementary materials.
